MASTERTON.

Masterton, February 15. A committee of the Wairarapa North County Council has decided that the wheel-tire by-laws shall-be the same as last year, subject to the operations of the Public "Works Act, 1894. The committee has also decided that a fee of £3O shall be collected from owners of sawmills using the roads for each circular saw in use. This decision is likely to cause a good deal of trouble. % :

A man named; Harry Adams, working at the Empire Hotel, -was engaged cutting firewood with a circular saw this afternoon, when two of his fingers were taken off above the second joint and others severely lacerated. The -wounds were dressed by Dr Butement.

Frederick James Donovan, farmer, of Masterton, bankrupt, has been charged on the information of Mr W. B. Chennells, Deputy-Official Assignee, with having purchased from Mr F. H. Wood, of Greytown, 13 head of cattle for the sum of £55, for which he gave his promissory j note, without having any reasonable or ! probable ground of expectation of being able to pay the same as well as all his other debts. The debtor has been further ■ charged with executing, an instrument by way of security in favpur of A. G. Pilmer for the sum of £164 on certain crops when he was owing other creditors £285, thereby intending to defraud-his other creditors. A third charge has been laid - against the bankrupt of giving a security to A, G. Pilmer with intent to give "him an undue preference over other creditors. The cases were called on this morning, and adjoured on the application of Mr Pownall, who is appearing for the defence. Mr Walter Bentley lectured on "Our Best Friends" in the Theatre Royal on Thursday evening. The triennial valuations of the Wairarapa North County Council have been completed. Mr H. Jacobi, of the Wanderers' Cycling Club, Napier, passes through Masterton tomorrow afternoon en route for Wellington. He will try to do the journey between Napier and Wellington in 24 hours. The Wairarapa North County Council has appointed Mr Hemming Neilson to be poundkeeper at Mauriceville. Masterton, February 16. ' The excursionists arrived home on Friday night punctual to time without the slightest mishap. v All thoroughly enjoyed themselves,', and speak highly of the treatment they received in Wellington. 4. deputation of the Latter Day Saints has been endeavouring to obtain members for their organisation in Masterton during the last few days. The train which arrived with the excursionists on Friday night was the largest passenger train that ever came into the local station. A young man named Moorcock was forwarded to the Wellington Lunatic Asylum to-day. He belongs to Hastwell, and was

brought in by his father for medical examination. The unfortunate lad had an epileptic fit in the office of the Stipendiary Magistrate. Masterton, February 18. A woman named Devereux was picked up on the footpath leading to the railway station this morning. Her face and hands were severely cut, and she was in a semiunconscious condition. She was removed to the police station, where she was attended by Dr Butement. She will probably be charged with drunkenness as soon as she is in a fit state to appear. A Chinese tradesman named Ah Lop has reported to tjhe police that at an advanced hour on Saturday night a number of young men entered his shop and helped themselves to the fruit. When requested to leave they would not do so, and refused to allow the Chinaman to close his premises. Eventually Ah Lop went out to get a stick, and in his absence he says that his cash drawer was opened and the contents removed, and the young men then decamped. The police have been making enquiries into the matter, but are inclined to doubt the story of the Chinaman in some of the more important particulars. The North Wairarapa Rifle Club defeated the Carterton Rifle Club on Saturday by 502 points to 456. In the match Mr C. Anketell, of the former Club, made the excellent record of seven bull's-eyes—-the possible—at the 500yds range. A challenge has been accepted by the North Wairarapa Rifle Club from the Woodville Club to fire a friendly match on March 13th.

At the evening service at St. Matthew's Church, Masterton, on Sunday, the Rev A. C Yorke stated that he would commence giving instruction to the scholars of the Masterton public school on Wednesday afternoon next, when he would ask children to remain behind for half an hour whilst he gave them Biblical instructions, which they would not be likely to receive elsewhere. A hired horse in the possession of Mr D. McLachlan, of Masterton, fell over a bridge at Hastwell on Saturday, and was so severely injured that it had to be destroyed. Blackberries are so plentiful in Mauriceville that they are allowed to rot on the brambles by the bucketful. Masterton, February 19. At a meeting of the Gas Committee of the Masterton Borough Council two tenders were received for alterations at the retort house, the tender of Messrs Norbury and Trevor at .£3 being accepted. An offer of .£35 from Mr T. Gr. Mason to purchase the old biicks at the gas tank was accepted. The autumn show of the Masterton Horticultural and Industrial Society, to he held in the Drill Hall on Thursday next, promises to be very successful. A number of exhibitors from Eketahuna and other parts of the Forty-mile Bush are expected. A number of rabbit cases are to be heard at the next criminal sitting of the Magistrate's Court in Masterton.

Two patients were admitted to the Masterton Hospital last week. There are six male and three female patients in the Hospital at this date. A heated controversy is taking place in the local papers on the question of the decision of the- Masterton School Committee to allow the Bey A. C. Yorke to give religious instruction to the scholars of the school after school hours. The woman Devereux, who was; arrested yesterday, was brought before the Court this morning and discharged on condition that she paid medical and other expenses.
