PUBLIC BATHS A DIRE NECESSITY.

TO THE EDITOR. Sib,—Councillor Anderson, endowed with a sound, equable mind, is the modern Hercules for purifying the Augean stables of this city suprema a situ by his strenuous efforts to procure suitable swimming baths and recreation grounds, to develop sDund minds in sound bodies in our rising generation especially. It is scandalous that in this central city of shipping and commerce, situated on the highway of the mighty Pacific, with an increasing population, congested streets, and an ever evanescent tourist traffic, suitable baths cannot be found for a refreshing plunge after a pentup voyage, and citizens closely confined daily in Governmental and mercantile offices, and" large manufactories and meat preserving establishments existing in our midst. How eagerly those engaged in bringing out the daily papers, and those oonfined 'in printing and book-binding effices, and other avocations of confinement,

would hail as a boon such a glorious institution for the vital prolongation of life, and strengthening and developing the human form divine, you, sir, can fully appreciate and will beyond doUbt exercise your ability to strengthen my puny efforts to secure wtens saria in corjpore sano, and tints become a public benefactor to long suffering humanity and mankind generally, for we have a splendid freshwater service running to waste in the city, for lack of means to Conserve it for further utilisation. Tho vital necessity of learning to swim is intensified and demonstrated by the horrifying casualties occurring all over the universe.—l am, &c, De Profundis. Bth February, 1895.
