A SILVER CRADLE.

The late Mayor of Wellington (Mr A. de B. Brandon) was presented— with a silver cradle, at the meeting-of. the City Council last week, by the members of the Council and the Corporation officials, in commemoration of the birth to him of a son during his term of office. Mrs Brandon was present during the ceremony. The Mayor of Melbourne and Mrs Snowden were unable to be present. The Mayor, in making the presentation, said he hoped the cradle would help to cement the friendship existing between the councillors and Mr Brandon. They hoped Mr Brandon's son might prove a worthy son of a worthy father. (Applause.) Mr Brandon, in reply, said the present would serve to remind him of a time when, he believed, he occupied a position of respect among them —a position which was the highest in the gift of the citizens. If his boy was spared he hoped he would in years to come worthily take his place among his fellow-citizens, and he himself should be proud if he lived to see him occupying the position that he (Mr Brandon) at this moment occupied. He thanked the Mayor, Councillors and officials for their handsome present. Councillor Anderson called for "three mild cheers" for Mrs Brandon and her son, which were accordingly given, and Mr Brandon having briefly replied on behalf of Mrs Brandon, the pleasant ceremony concluded. The cradle is the work of Messrs Jenness and Co., Willis street, and will be on view in their windows during the next few days.
