ANGLICAN GENERAL SYNOD.
ify Telegraph. — Press Association. Nelson, February 14. At the Synod to-day Colonel Pitt moved the second reading of a Bill to remove the disabilities under which members of a church but residents in another parish are at present placed by allowing non-resi-dents of the parish who are accustomed to attend church within the parish not less than a year to exercise the right of voting. The Bill was thrown out. Canon Mac Murray moved that no clergyman not holding a license or permission to ofiiciate from one of the Bishops of the province be permitted to ofiiciate for more than one Sunday in any diocese without authority from the same. This was carried, and it was then resolved that it shall be the duty of the clergyman in charge, or in his absence the churchwardens, to provide that no clergyman minister without proper authority. On the motion of Sir John Hall, it was resolved that in order to give effect to the resolution of the sth February on the subject of Bible-teaching in the public schools, the Synod respectfully requests the Bishops to take steps, as far as possible, ; to cooperate with the heads of other religious bodies in New Zealand for the purpose of pressing the desired reform on the Government and the Legislature. The Committee on Home and Foreign Missions recommended the following allocations : —New Guinea, £l5O ; Maori Missions, £l5O ; Melanesia, £196.
It is hoped to finish the session to-
morrow night. The Bishop of Dunedin left for his home to-day. Nelson, February 15.
At the- Synod to-day, Bishop Julius moved that the next triennial meeting of the Synod be held in Christchurch ;. but an amendment moved by Colonel Pitt, that it take place at Norfolk Island, if practicable, was carried on the voices.
■;.,. A resolution was passed commending to the favourable consideration of Church members a letter from Bishop John Selwyn, Warden of Selwyn College, Cambridge, suggesting a memorial window in the chapel of that college to the first Bishop of New Zealand. A Bill under the charge of Bishop Julius, providing that " every priest in sole charge of a parish or parochial district shall be styled 'vicar,' and every clergyman licensed to assist the vicar shall be styled 'curate,'" passed its third reading, and was adopted without amendment. A long discussion took place regarding St. John's College at Auckland. Eventually it was resolved that the College be closed, for the present. Nelson, February 16. The Anglican General Synod closed shortly after midnight. Sir John Hall's Bill reducing a parish to a parochial district for non-compliance with the conditions under which it was constituted went through all stages.
