FIRES.

A quantity of shrubs and ornamental plants in the grounds adjoining Mr Bain’s residence in Woolconibe street became ignited yesterday week, and blazed furiously for some considerable time. The Firo Brigade, under Lieutenant Adams, turnod out, and had considerable dillieulty in preventing the flames spreading to the house. However, there was a good supply of water available, and in about threequarters of an hour the outbreak was subdued, although considerable damage was done to the shrubs. A telegram received by Inspector Bonder from Constable Darby, of Carterton, states that a two-roomed cottage, occupied by William Ridgway, at Makimaki, was destroyed by lire at 21 pan. on Wednesday. The lire is supposed to have originated from the burning bush. The cottage was insured for 4275 in the Standard Ollico, and the furniture for £SO.
