FIRES.

A quantity of shrubs and ornamental plants in the grounds adjoining Mr Bain’s residence in Woolconibe street became ignited yesterday week, and blazed furiously for some considerable time. The Firo Brigade, under Lieutenant Adams, turnod out, and had considerable dillieulty in preventing the flames spreading to the house. However, there was a good supply of water available, and in about threequarters of an hour the outbreak was subdued, although considerable damage was done to the shrubs. A telegram received by Inspector Bonder from Constable Darby, of Carterton, states that a two-roomed cottage, occupied by William Ridgway, at Makimaki, was destroyed by lire at 21 pan. on Wednesday. The lire is supposed to have originated from the burning bush. The cottage was insured for 4275 in the Standard Ollico, and the furniture for £SO. Mr Barrett’s drapery shop at Podding, with its stock, and an adjacent building, occupied by Mr Prior, solicitor, were burned early on Sunday morning. Tlio insurances, so far as is known, are in tho Commercial Union and London, Liverpool and Globe ollices. Woodvillk, January 31. A high gale is raging, and there are bush fires all around. In tho town, tho railway cottages are m danger, as, although tho Firo Brigade lias turned’ out, no water is available. In some parts of tho surrounding, country tho settlors have been up all night protecting their homesteads, and there is still grave cause for anxiety. Auckland, February 1. A block of shops in Karangahapo road, owned by Mr Potter, was burned down last night, and a boy seven years of ago, son of Mr deal, fruiterer, burned to death. Others had narrow escapes.
