The Ruapehu, from London, via Plymouth, Capetown and Hobart, arrived in the harbour at 10 on Wednesday night. The local manager of the Huddart Parker Company has received advices that the new steamer Anglian will leave Melbourne on the 6th February for Dunedin direct, and will on the 13th take up her running from that port to Sydney, via Lyttelton, Wellington, and East Coast ports. The Hauroto, which arrived from Sydney yesterday week, brought 163 passengers, of whom 109 landed at Wellington. She also brought a large English mail. The postal authorities have been advised that the s.s. Arawa, with English mails of 29th December, left San Francisco on tbe 12th instant, two days late ; and that the Alameda, with colonial mails of 29th December, arrived at San Francisco on the 18th instant, one day late. Captain Allman and Mr Hay have returned from Napier after fixing the site for the proposed lighthouse at Cape Kidnappers. It will be on the verge of the headland directly overlooking the sea. Captain Allman will take advantage of the Hinemoa’s next trip up the East Coast - to survey the site from the sea. H.M.S. RINGDOVE. The gunboat IT.M.S. Ringdove arrived here on Sunday morning from Auckland and Tauranga. She left Auckland on Tuesday week, and arrived at Tauranga next morning. She remained there until Friday morning, when she left for Wellington, arriving here at 10 a,m. She anchored in the stream for a short time, and was then berthed at the Railway Wharf. The Pangdove is a first-class screw gunboat of 805 tons, and her engines are 720 indicated horse-power (natural draught) and 1200 horse - power (forced draught). She carries six 4in guns, two Nordenfeldts and two quick-firing guns. Her officers are as follow : —Lieutenant - Commander, Captain James Gordon Bremer ; lieutenant, W. Willis; sub-lieutenant, W. M. Moir; surgeon, J. M. France : assistant paymaster in charge, J. E. Jones ; engineer, D. J. Carruthers ; gunner, H. Mcnhenitt. The crew number 78 all told. She was re-commissioned in Sydney in February last, and has since

been employed in the Island trade. Her future movements in New Zealand are uncertain, as she is now a waiting orders. The vessel was visited on Sunday afternoon by a large number of people, who were courteously received on board.

Rio de Janeiro, January 27. The Kaikoura left yesterday for London with her frozen meat in good order.
