SHOOTING AFFRAY AT TIMARU.

Timaru, January 28.

On Saturday night a seaman named Thomson, of the German barque Franz, and the second mate, a young man named Frederick Schnier, had an encounter, when Schnier (who says the other rushed at him) fired two shots—one over his head and the other at his body. Thomson was taken to the hospital and died this afternoon.

Deceased came on board drunk, and challenged the second mate to. fight. At the inquest, the jury found a verdict of wilful murder against the second mate, being unanimously of opinion that the provocation given did not justify the use of a revolver, especially as help was within call.

Accused stands remanded on the charge of shooting with intent to murder.
