INSPECTING CATHOLIC SCHOOLS.
A circular letter was read at the meeting of the Wellington Board of Education Jon t e 30th from Archbishop Redwood and the Catholic Bishops of Dunedin, Christchurch and Auckland, requesting the Board, under section 98 of the Education Act, to authorise the inspection of the Catholic schools in the Wellington Education Board district. The Chairman said he would like to ascertain from Mr Lee (chief inspector) whether the Board’s inspectors could undertake so much more work. The question would involve not alone the inspection of Catholic schools, but also those of other denominations, and that would necessitate the appointment of another inspector by the Board. He considered that the proper course would be to make application to the Education Department to appoint an inspector for these schools. He suggested that the consideration of the letter be postponed until the next meeting. Mr Buchanan said that on the ground of principle he should have moved the adjournment of such an important matter. Eventually it was decided that the application should stand over for consideration until the next meeting.
