EDUCATIONAL.

EDUCATION BOARD. T The usual monthly meeting of the Wellington Education Board was held on the 30th. Present—Messrs J. R. Blair (chairman), W. W. McCardle, J. Young, F Bradey, F. H. Fraser, W. A. Fitzherbert, W. C. Buchanan, M.H.R., Dr Newman, M.R.R., and Rev J. Paterson. The chairman stated that the credit balance at the bank was .£270, and that the amount required for the payment of the month’s accounts, including salaries and building grants, was .£3758 10s 9d. The accounts were passed for payment. A grant of <£l4 was made for fencing at the Taita school. A final protest against the appointment of Mr F. Bennett as headmaster of the Carterton School was received. The resignation of Miss Barnard as pupil teacher at Eaiwaiwai was accepted. It was decided to grant Mr James Gifford, first assistant Clyde quay school, nine months’ leave of absence without salary. Leave of absence on similar terms for three months was granted Miss Newton, assistant, Kaiwarra. The following appointments were made : —Miss Houghton to have charge of the aided school at Kaituna, and Miss Banks to a similar position at Pencarrow; Miss Ellen Searle to be sewing mistress at Ohariu; and Mr Donald Sinclair, teacher of the aided school at Mufcgapakeha. The question of closing the Ilorokiwi School was left in the hands of Mr Bradey with po ver to act, and the chairman and Messrs Bradey, Young and Dr Newman were appointed a committee to deal with the request for a school at Waikanae. A request for a special grant of «£8 8s from Pahiatua for general purposes was granted. It was decided to leave the question of fencing and repairs at the Terrace School in the hands of the chairman.

The fencing of a right-of-way to the Mitchelltown School was sanctioned.

The sub-leasing of a portion of the Board’s property in Sydney street, in the occupation of Mr M. P. Cameron, was agreed to. Appointments were made to the Eketahuna, Ohau and East Clareville Schools.
