A six-mile race took place this afternoon between twelve-oared cutters of the Auck land Naval Artillery andll.M.S. Eingdove. Auckland won by 19sec. The boats were then changed, when the Ringdoves won by lmin 24sec. - The" Rev W. Beatty, Warden of St. John's College, accepts the incumbency of St. Mark's, Remuera, to succeed the Rev I. Richards, who has resigned. Westport, December 22. The coal export for the week ended today was 5000 tons, of which 219 tons were from the Cardiff mine, and the balance from the Westport Coal Company. Greymouth, December 22. The Reefton gold returns for the week are : —Keep-it-Dark, 105 oz amalgam, 92 tons (clean up) ; Russell, 290 z amalgam. 70 tons (clean up) ; Hercules, 1490 z amalgam, 61 tons (clean up) ; Al, 107 oz gold, 16 tons ; Cock Sparrow dredge, 33|oz amalgam for the week; Buller dredge, 17oz gold, 104 hours. Dunedin, December 22. Private advices frOni New York report that the kerosene market has risen equal to £d per gallon, and a further rise is ex-* pected. \., Ai ; /• Dunedin, December 22.. A number of fishermen. wore charged at Port Chalmers to-day with unlawfully ! working at their calling on'Sunday. The charges were as' it was shown that the fishing was' carried on outside territorial limits. By Telegraph. — Own Correspondent. Hastings, December 23. Wi Pere and Honi Heke paid a flying visit and addressed a large meeting of Natives at Waipatu. The burden of their | remarks was to the effect that the Natives should have nothing to do with the Land Court, and let matters rest for at least two years. By that time they would get legislation enabling Native owners to deal with their lands as they pleased.
