ANNUAL SHEEP RETURNS.
INCREASE OF 880,460 SHEEP.
Tbe annual sheep returns have just been/ completed by the Stock Department, and., they show an increase of 850,460 sheep within the year ended the 30th April last. The following are the particulars for the six stock districts of the Colony Auckland, 858,295 sheep,* increase, 1325. Number of owners, 2296-; increase, 118. Sheep rate, £BSB ; increase!, £l. Napier, 4,286,986 sheep ;*increase, 176,309. Number of owners, 3565 > increase, 133. Sheep rate, £4287 ; increase, £177. Wellington-West Coast, 4,024,071 sheep; increase, 306,357. Number of owners, 3565 ; increase, 244!; Sheep rate, £4024 j increase, £306. Totals for the North- Island, 9,169,352 sheep ; increase, ; 483,991. Number of owners;- 7220; -increase, 495. Sheep rate, £9169 ; increase, £484. Mrirlborough-N elson, 887,582 sheep; increas'd; 52,422. Number of owners, 1389 j increase, 57. Sheep rate, £888; increase, £53. Canterbury-Kaikoura, 5,744,668 sheep ; increase, 259,687. Number of owners, 3671; increase, 312. Sheep rate, £5745 ; increase, £260. . Otago, 4,429,227 sheep; increase, 54,360. Number ‘of owners, 3557 ; increase, 194. Sheep rate, £4429 ; increase, £54. Totals for the South Island, 11,061,477 sheep; increase, 366,469. Number of owners, 8617; increase, 563. Sheep rate, £11,062; increase, £367.. Totals for the Colony; 20,230,829 sheep; increase, 850,460. Number of owners, 15,837; increase, 1058. Sheep rate, £20,231; increase, £B5l. The detailed statistics for the several counties show an increase of sheep in 49 counties and a decrease in 23 counties. Those which show the largest • increases are: —Oroua (Wellington), 99,698; Waitaki, 85,412 ; Geraldine, . 76,212; Cook, 64,856 ; North Wairarapa, 53,563; Ashburton, 53,115. The heaviest decreases are:—Vincent, 23,825; Cheviot, 15,230; Whakatane (Auckland), 31,023; Clutha, 8838; Taranaki, 8791; Taieri, 8277.
