RAILWAY RETURNS.

The return of railway receipts and expenditure for the four weeks ending 10th. November shows the receipts to have been £81,714 13s Id, and the expenditure £53,006 11s lid. In the corresponding period of last year the figures were: —Receipts, £80,056 14s; expenditure, £54,128 13s 7d. Of the revenue,' the North Island lines contributed £33,422 8s 6d, as against £30,301 Os 2d for the corresponding four weeks of last year; and the Middle Island lines £49,292 4s 7d, as against £49,755 13s lOd. The North. Island lines absorbed of the expenditure £19,888 5s 7d, as against £19,429 Os 3d, and the Middle Island lines £33,118 6s 4d, as against £34,697 13s 4d. The proportion of expenses to revenue on the several lines, calculated on an annual average, for the respective periods of 1894 and 1893 was as follows : —North Island —Kawakawa, 146"70, 92‘62 ; Whangarei, 87'78, 75 - 89; Kaihu, 97*61, 93-61'; Auckland, 7492, 71-89; NapierTaranaki, 69*55, 67 58; Wellington, 75*98, 69-98. Middle Island Hurunui-Bluff, 68 33, 63*48; Greymoutli-Brunner, 53'16, 55 - 55; Grreymouth-llokitika, 55*99, ; Westport, 49 64, 57*37; Nelson, 97*83, 105*94; Picton, 125*09, 114*54 : grand total, 69*63 65 - 91. On the Wellington section the receipts amounted to £6OOO, as against £5791 12s 9cl for the corresponding four weeks of last year; the number of passengers carried was 29 } 549, as against 29,365; the fares amounted to £2471 19s 6d, as against £2364 8s id; the freight on goods showed an increase from £3OIO 12s 9d to £3150 19s Bd.
