OBITUARY.

T. HODGINS.

Many of our readers will hear with regret of the death of Mr Thomas Hodgins, which occurred on Monday morning at the Princess Hotel/ Molesworth street, of which his brother is licensee. Deceased, who was a native- of Tipperary, landed in Wanganui 29 years ago, and soon afterwards removed to Wellington, where he was manager of the late Mr W. B. Rhodes property at "Wadestown. Subsequently, on the death of his employer, he took the Shamrock Hotel, Molesworth street, ana remained there until he settled on land-at Pahiatua four or five years ago. He has been a member of the Pahiatua County Council and a Justice of the Peace. He leaves a widow and three sons.

SIR J. S. D. THOMPSON. HE EXPIRES WHILE AT LUNCHEON AT WINDSOR CASTLE. London, December 12. Sir J. S. D. Thompson, Premier of Canada, who was expected to shortly resign, died suddenly at Windsor Castle ’ immediately after W had been sworn in as a Privy Councillor. London, December 13.

SIR O. W. BRIERLY. London, December 17. The death is announced of Sir Oswald Walters Brierly, marine painter to the Queen, who visited New Zealand with the Duke of Edinburgh in the G-alatea m 1867.

Sir Oswald Walters Brierly was on board H.M.S. Rattlesnake during her surveys ot the Great Barrier Reef of Australia, the Louisiade Archipelago, and part of New Guinea, and in the Meander with Captain the Hon Henry Keppel, he visited New Zealand, Tongatabu, Tahiti and many other places. He cruised in different parts of the world for eleven years on board various ot H.M. ships. His sketches of the cruise ot the Galatea were exhibited at South Kensington. He painted many important historical marine pictures, the principal ot which have been engraved.

W. ERRINGTON, C.E. Auckland, December 17. The death is announced of Mr William ErringtoH, C,E., at the age of 62. He was a very old colonist, and was prominently connected with various engineering works on the Auckland Goldfields, the Calliope Dock, &c.

MRS WILLIAMS. Napier, December 18

Mrs Williams, wife of Archdeacon Leonard Williams, Bishop-elect of Waiapu, died to-day, aged 67. She came to the Colony in 1853, and was always an active worker and. assistant to tier Husband. Mrs Williams was much beloved in the Poverty Bay District, where she was best known.
