A CEMETERY AT PORIRUA.
On Tuesday last Councillors Majendi, Gillet and Bradey, of tho Hutt County Council, headed by Dr Newman, M.H.R., were introduced to the Hon W. P. Beeves, Minister of Education. Dr Newman said the object of their visit was to lay the question of a cemetery in the Porirua district before the Minister. The small one near Tawa Flat was getting filled, and it had been intimated that after tho 31st December the place would be closed, and no more interments permitted. The nearest existing cemetery was Karori, which was a long way off. There was one at Pahautanui, but it was nearly full. As a new place would certainly havo to bo set apart before very long tho Hutt County Council asked the assistance of tho Government, who had a lot of land at their disposal near Porirua. Mr Majendi pointed out that the population in the district would bo likely to increase to a considerable extent, and if the Government could give them a corner at Porirua the case would be mat. There was ono located about south-east, adjoining Mr J. Wall's property, which would be a most suitable site. 'Mr Bradey said that steps would be taken to form a cemetry trust, which would havo control of tho property. It was pointed out by Dr Newman that . there would lw a Large number of insane people in the locality indicated in the near future, and consequently the death rate would be heavier than what it would be in an ordinary working population. The Minister said that it appeared on the face of it that something would have to be done in the matter. He would give ib his consideration and let the deputation know.
