' ARRIVAL OF THE TAINTJI. Port Chalmers, June 5. The Tainui, from London, via Cape and Hobart, arrived to-day. She left London on April 19, and the passago has been agreeable, and without special incident. She has 2000 tons cargo, of which 400 is for this port. Passengers, for Lyttelton—Mrs and Miss Hopkins, Messrs Podwin, Scheraun, Steeds, Masters Marshall (2) ; for Wellington—Miss Boyes, Mr Mcßrido, Mrs McCarthy and family (4), Mr and Mrs Ness, Mrs Ward, Misses Ward (2) and OToolo ; for Now Plymouth —Miss Roser ; for Auckland —Messrs Bullough, Mitchell, Lepicar, Phillips, Haulinan, Cockburn, Mr and Mrs and Miss Patterson, Mr and Mrs Dunne, Miss Devine, Messrs Ranson, McLoughlau, Tomlinson.

The schooner Alert has been thrown up a little higher on the beach at Lyell Bay by the sea. She is apparently uninjured. Until the hatches are taken off it will not be known whether the cargo is damaged. The vessel, it is thought, will be got off safely.

The Rangatira, which left for Lyttolton and London on Friday morning, took the following cargo from Wellington : carcases sheep and lamb, 9764 legs and iheuld&rjj 110 cases kitoviwU casks tallow

and pelts, 727 bales wool and skins, 35 do flax, 30 casks pitch, 100 bags iron sand, 211 cases preserved moats, 29 packages sundries, 1 bale rags, 2 cases live birds, 155 drums glycerine, 200 sacks patent manuro. Tho ss Star of England, from London, via Sydney, Auckland and East Coast, arrived off the Heads last night, but did not come into harbour. After taking in a small quantity of goneral cargo, she leaves for Wanganui, where 10,000 carcases of meat, wool, &c, will be shipped. She sails afterwards for the Bluff, making that her final port of departure for Home. The Pakeha arrived in London on Saturday last with her cargo of frozen meat in good condition.

The Rotokino sighted the barque Federation, of 1041 tons, Captain Borier, 104 days out from New York, off Capo Farewell on Sunday afternoon. Her cargo consists of 2043 tons, all for Wellington. Messrs Bannatyne and Co. are the local agents. The Tyser steamer Maori King, which was to have followed the ss Star of Victoria on the berth for Australian and New Zealand ports, is not now to come to this Colony. The Hawkes Bay will probably take her dates. London, June 2. The Kaikoura left Plymouth to-day. She is loaded for Otago, Canterbury and Wellington.
