EXECUTION OF GLASSON.
Sydney, November 29. Edwin Hubert Glasson, the Carcoar murderer, was executed at Bathurst gaol this . morning. Death was instantaneous. The condemned man spoke on the scaffold, declaring his innocence, and saying that the line of defence adopted by his counsel had been taken against his will. He did not blame any one, but he felt sure that if certain evidence had been brought forward he would have got off. In his last words he sent his love to his wife, and said his hope was in God. Sydney, November 30. Glasson left an affectionate letter addressed to his unborn child.
On the morning of his execution at Bathurst Goal for the terrible double murder at Carcoar, Glasson was quite collected, engaging earnestly in devotions with the Church of England chaplain, and expressing himself ready to die. When the doomed man emerged from his cell on the right, his arms were pinioned and the white cap placed on his head. Having obtained permission to speak, he said : —“ I am leaving a world of sorrow. All who know me need not grieve. lam going to a happier sphere. lam not sorry, because I shall soon be in a brighter and better home, whose glory you have never experienced. I have to say, as I am about to stand before my Creator, that I die an innocent man, suffering for other people’s sins. I admit that the evidence was strong against me, but there were facts which should have come before the public. The defence set up on my behalf was none of my seeking. . I do not, however, blame anybody. Everything that could be done under the circumstances was done ; at tho same time, there were statements which should have been made, and if these had come out in evidence the case might have gone differently. As I say, I am a dying man, and will soon pass away. My thoughts are of my Maker, and my last words are that I think of my beloved wife.” Howard, the hangman, then adjusted the noose, pulled the flap of the cap down over the man’s face, the bolt ivas shot, and Glasson’s body hung suspended Avithout even a quiver, death haA’ing been instantaneous. Glasson’s demeanour since sentence avas passed struck all who saav him by his nerve and coolness.
