17. Mr W. Holmes (caretaker of the Wellington Bowling Green) has compiled a very interesting return of the season's play. It shows that the green has been occupied so far on 131 days, and that it has only been closed through wet weather on five Saturday afternoons, viz., the 25ih February, the 12th March and the three Saturdays prior to last Saturday. A record haß been kept of the number of members who have played each day during the season. The monthly totals are ?ts follow :—October, 120 ; November, 561; December, 722 ; January, 651; February, 668; March, 812; April, 451; May (up till Saturday last) 36 ; total, 4005. Some of the members have been very regular in their attendance. Thus one elderly gentleman has a record of 110 days' play, another is close up with 109 days ; there are two others with a register of 106 days ; one has 105 days to his credit; another 104 days; and yet another 101 days. The small green has been cut 121 times, and as each cutting obliges the caretaker to walk li miles, it follows that he has walked 151£miles in cutting the small green, in addition to which he has walked 108 milesin rolling it the same number of times. The large green has b>en cut 69 times, which at a calculation of 1\ miles each cutting means 155|miles of waiting, and it has been rolled 192 times, which at 2 miles for each rolling means 384 miles of additional locomotion. In round numbers Mr Haltnes has walked 800 miles this season in cutting or rolling both greens. At a meeting of Newtown residents, at which Mr W. G. Tustin presided, it was unanimously decided to form a bowling club, .and the following gentlemen were appointed a committee to carry out the preliminary arrangements : Messrs lustm, Hollis, Butterwortb, Astill, Crowther, Morris, Telford, Sloan, Jos. Davis, J. W. Davis, Ralph, Day, McLean and Sexton. It was decided to advent sis for suitable site for a green. Mr A. Sample promised to present a pair of bowk for the best player during the sea=on. Mr Gale (president of the Wellington Clu':), who was present, was thanked for the advice tendered by bun, and for the kindly feeling shown by the Wellington Club. The bowlers in the district are taking the matter up with a (>reat de.d of enthusiasm. ai.<d there is every reason to suppose that the naw club will be a great success.
