WELLINGTON MARKETS. Messrs Laery & Co. report current wholesale values asunder:—

Freeman R. Jackson and Co.'s Johnsonville. report: Cattle were in the usual number and were well competed for. Sheep were of indifferent sorts, none really prime coming forward. Pigs made excellent prices. Cattle—Best bullucks, L 8 5s to L 9 5s ; lighter ones, L 7 to L 7 17s 6d ; cows. L 4 12s 6d to L 5 17s 6d; veal calves, 21s ; ox beef, 18s to 19s per lOOlbs; cows, 15s to 16s. One superior bullock, purchased by Mr Riddlesford of Moleßworth street, brought Ll2 ss. Sheep—Wethers, 13s to 14a 6d ; ewes, 10s 6d to lis 4d. Pigs -Baconers, 44s to 595; porkers, 26s 6d to 27s 6d. (PEESS ASSOCIATION.) London, May 3, The present series of wool sales has closed, the prices being firm up to the last. The total quantity catalogued was 346,000 bales, of which 329,000 bales wore sold, and 31,000 bales were held over. Compared with the previous series merinos, superior greasy, were Id lower ; merinos, average quality, jd to higher; scoured, |d to id higher ; good crossbrecls, |d higher, while inferior crossbreds brought the same prices. Share quotations—New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., LI 15s; Dalgety and Co., L 5. London, May 4. The bank rate of discount is 3 per cent. London, May 5. The weekly returns of the Bank of England published to-day show the total reserve to be L 15,010,000. The proportion of reserve to liabilities is 41*38. Three months' bills are discounted at 2f per cent. Consols, 99 ; New Zealand 4 per cent inscribed stock, 96|.

Frozen mutton—First quality, 4d per lb ; second quality, 3 11-16 d ; lamb, s|d. About 1200 carcases of the Coptic's cargo, chiefly Lyttelton mutton, were damaged. Hobart, May 10. The Premier is urging the New South Wales and Victorian Governments to call a conference of representatives from the various Australian colonies to consider a proposal to establish Freetrade or a Customs Union. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company (Limited) have received from their London office the following cable message, dated May 3 :—Wool— The sales closed firmly this day. Since close of last sales greasy merino (superior) is |d to Id per lb lower, washed merino (superior), greasy merino (medium and inferior), fine and medium greasy crossbred are |d per lb higher, and scoured merino (superior, medium and inferior) Id per lb higher. Fine and medium washed crossbred, fine and medium scoured and coarse greasy crossbred are -|d to Id per lb higher. Coarse washed and scoured crossbred and greasy crossbred lambs are |d per lb higher. Other descriptions unchanged. The total quantity sold during the past sales is 324,000 bales, of which 195,000 have been taken for the Continent and 5000 for America. Fine mutton is worth 30s ; good beef is worth 27s 6d per cwt. Messrs Murray, Roberts and Co. have received the following, dated London, May 3rd, from their London friends, Messrs Sanderson, Murray and Co. : The sales have closed firm. 30,000 bales have been held over. Compared with opening rates greasy merino, the market has declined 5 per cent ; greasy merino extra good, there is no demand ; scoured , merino, market shows no change ; crossbred fine, the market has declined 10 per cent; crossbred inferior to medium, the market has advanced 2\ to 5 per cent. Mr W. A. Fitzherbert (president) and Mi H, D. O'Callaghan (secretary) of the Wellington Agricultural and Pastoral Association, waited on Wednesday upon Mr Maxwell (one of the Railway Commissioners) and represented that the present railway freight on rock salt was excessive, and ought to be reduced.
