The sitting of the Conference of Resident Magistrates concluded on Tuesday morning, after a session of 11 days. The conference dealt with the question of solicitors’ costs and the rules of procedure in the Resident Magistrates’ Courts under the Act of 1867 and its amendments, and has drawn up codes with the view of obtaining simplicity and uniformity. The regulations under The Imprisonment for Debt Abolition Act, 1874, were also taken into consideration, with a view to remedying defects in the rules, and have made proposals for the amendment and consolidation of the Acts dealing with Resident Magistrates’ Courts. The recommendations made by the conference are embodied in a report for presentation to the Minister for Justice. Should tho Minister approve of these, they will be submitted to His Excellency the Governor for his approval. Such matters as can be dealt with by Order in Council will be given effect to, while matters involving legislation will of course have to be brought before Parliament. The conference consisted of the Under-Secre-tary for Justice (Mr C. J. Haselden), District Judge Robinson, and Messrs Richmond (Christchurch) and Brabant (Palmerston North). At the annual meeting of the Taranaki Harbour Board, held on Tuesday, Mr T. King was re-elected chairman. He intimated that it was likely that public subscriptions would be raised to carry out the protective works at the breakwater; also, that the plant not required should be sold to raise funds to improve the harbour. A cheque for L 72, the proceeds of the Friendly Societies’ Demonstration held on Anniversary Day, was presented to the Hospital Trustees on Tuesday. The Trustees passed a vote of thanks to the Demonstration Committee for their munificent donation, It was stated that the outgoing committee had recommended that another demonstration should beheld on November 9th.

The local agents for the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company have been advised that the Tanui left Plymouth for Auckland, Wellington and Lyttelton on the 18th inst.
