Sir George Grey met with a great reception on his arrival here yesterday afternoon. In spite of heavy rain that was falling, several thousand people turned out to welcome him. In the evening the Mayor of Adelaide gave a banquet in honour of Sir George Grey and Mr John Forrest, Premier of Western Australia, who called here on his return to Perth. The gathering was largely attended, and was a most brilliant affair. Chief Justice L. J. Way, Lieu-tenant-Governor, presided. Solomon, the proprietor of the tobacconist shop which was raided by the police recently, was fined L 250, or in default six months’ imprisonment, for being the keeper of a gaming house. Three other persons were fined nominal amounts, and the charges against the others were dismissed. Government has accepted the tender of a local firm, at L 300,000, for the manufacture of locomotives. On arrival here the P. and O. Company’s Britannia was quarantined, owing to thore being chickenpox on board. Melbourne, April 15. Chief Justice Higginbotham denies that he is the author of an article which was attributed to him on “Greater Britain,” and referred to in the London cables. He says that the article was based on private correspondence. t Brisbane, April 15. Four French escapees have arrived at Thursday Island in canoes, but they were captured as soon as they landed. The yield of gold for this quarter was 132,0000 z, a decrease cf 17,0000 z on the corresponding quarter of last year. Sydney, April 15. The man Dalton was arrested on a charge of murdering his wife yesterday.
