MELROSE BOROUGH COUNCIL

The usual monthly meeting of the Melrose Borough Council was held on Tuesday, there being present-His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. H. Heaton), and Councillors Bayliss, Mowatt, Coffins, Hellivell, and Chegwm. Councillor Heginbotham signed the usual declaration, and took hia seat in the Council. A deputation representing the Kilbirnie ratepayers, consisting of Messrs A. D. Crawford and V. Claridge, waited on tbe Council for the purpose of urging upon them the neceasity for reducing the grade of the road between Newtown and Kilbirnie. Mr Jorgenson not being present with the necessary data the question was, at the request of Mr Crawford, referred to the next meeting of the Public Works Committee. The report of tbe Public Works Committee was read and adopted, an addition being made to the clause dealing with decayed fish and refuse at Island Bay, extending the provision to Evans Bay. A letter was read from Messrs Bell, Gully and Izard, on behalf of a syndicate, with regard to the formation of the Brooklyn roads, and the Council went into committee on the question. On resuming it was decided that a committee consisting of the whole of the members of the Council, with the Inspector of Works, visit the place and report as to the best manner in which improvements could he effected and the probable cost of same, the committee to meet at Brooklyn on April Ist, at 3 D.m. Councillor Heginbothan asked for information as to what had been done in regard to connecting Goa street with Charles street North, Kilbirnie, and he was informed by the Mayor that all information could bo obtained from the Town Clerk. Accounts amounting to £9l 4a lOd having been passed for payment the Council adjourned.
