THE LABOUR QUESTION.

(PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Christchurch, November 21.

This morning a deputation from the Wharf Labourers’ Union waited on the Committee of the Stevedoring Association, and requested with regard to the employment of wharf labourers that they might be restored to the position they were in before the strike. They were informed that the Association could not do this, but Union men were being employed, and no difference made in the former wages. The Mayor of Lyttelton and some of the members of the Borough Council waited on the Stevedores’ Association Committee and requested them to employ Unionists out of work. The Committee pointed out that though they could not dismiss the free labourers who had helped them through the recent difficulty, they were employing many Unionists, that the latter were earning more than the free labourers, and that last week the Unionists’ earnings exceeded the free labourers’ by over £IOO. The balance-sheet of the Labour Day Demonstration shows a profit of £74. £3O has been placed on deposit, some small gratuities voted, and a loan made to the tampers’ Society.
