A severe earthquake throughout the province of Corinlbia caused a panic in a theatre at Klagenfurt, the capital of the province, but no serious damage was done by the shock, Brussels, January 17. The Belgian .Government have instituted an “ injury fund ” of two million francs for workmen in the employment of the Government. Madrid, January 18. The ex-Queen Regent Christina has asked Senator Martinez to form a new Cabinet. Madrid, January 20. Senor Martinez has failed to form a Ministry, and Senor Sagasta has been called on to undertake the task again. Constantinople, January 18. There are symptoms of further trouble at Crete. Berlin, January 17. The colliery hands in Westphalia are now demanding a reduction of tho hours of labour to eight, and an increase of wages by 50 per cent. Berlin, January 18. The port stokers and coal men of Hamburg have struck, owing to a reduction in the rate of wages. Ten thousand miners of Charleroi have renewed their strike. Berlin, January 20. The Berlin Post advocates sending the mails via Salonica and Port Said, and contends that a day would be saved by adopting that route instead of the Brindisi route. St. Petersburg, January 17. The Czar, in replying to New Year greetings from Moscow, says ho prays that the development of the resources of the country may continue undisturbed amidst the profound peace which is desired by all tho Great Powers. Hamburg, January 20. There has been a great influx of
stokers from the Bailie, and the case of the men who recently struck against the reduction of wages is hopeless. Paris, January 20. The Rothschilds have refused to float the Russian loan in Paris, on the ground that the security offered was inadequate, and that Franco would shortly require a loan herself.
