SPORTING TOPICS.

(BY MARTINI.) The acceptances for the Wellington Cup leave a good fieid in. I shall reserve final comment until next week.

The New Zealanders, Pretender (7st 21b) and Allanna (7st 41b) ran first and second in the Trial Stakes at the Mentone races on the 7th inst.

Secretary, the hurdler, was sold for £IOO at Queenstown the other day. His new master is Mr Williams, a Victorian who bought the horse for huuting purposes. Anercom’s racing powers and durableness, says an exchange, have made him celebrated the world over, and it is not surpiising to learn that Captain Machell—one of England’s largest buyers, has offered a price for the celebrated son of Chester and Cinnamon. The negotiations with the Hon James White were carried on through Joe Thompson, now in the Old Country. But the Sydney owner is not to be tempted. He refuses to sell. Perhaps the price offered was nothigh enough, for it is difficult to understand that he would decline to part with Abercorn if, say a drayload ef sovs were offered in exchange. But we may be sure that a very stiff sum indeed would be required to induce him to part with a horse that as a sire promises to be worth a mint of money as a successor to the aging Chester ; and for sentimental reasons alone, Mr White would, lam sure, cling to the horse as long as possible, We all appreciate such a sentiment, and are pleased to see the Sydney man less ready to barter away an old servant than was the Duke of Westminster. Peter Boland, the Australian boxer, has retqroed to Melbourne, a ffd’ s to be matched against Jim Hall and Ben Seth. He says he challenged Laing while iu New Zealand, but that the Wanganui man said nothing until he (Boland) had got away. i The Duke of Portland headed the list of English winning owners last year with £73,858, of which Donovan won £38,666. This is the best on record, both for horse and owner.

At the Hawkesbury meeting, according to a Sydney writer, Mr J. White’s colts for the English Derby of 1891 ‘were paraded in the saddling pacdock with numbered saddle clothes on, so that everyone knew what he was looking at. They were then taken out on the course, Huxley upon Wentworth, by Chester, from Trafalgar, Ashworth on Nepean, by Obiter from lolanthe, and Ellis on Mons Meg, by Martini-Henry from Malacca. They first cantered a couple of furlongs, then galloped at three-quarter pace. "Wentworth, a brown colt, very evenly made all oyer, moved.the best, and promises to possess plenty of pace. Mons Meg, a filly, was with him. and evidently will be very fast. Malacca’s previous foal is Singapore. She moves very well, and is a low-set, stoutlybuilt filly. Nepean is a handsome-looking, dark-brown colt, standing at the present time 15.3. His quarters are veiy powerful, with a splendid shoulder and good head and neck. He gallops a bit high, bqt so did his sire. To my fancy he is the pick of the trio over a distance.’
