DEATH OF MONSEIGNEUR COLEMAN.
(PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Dunedin, January 15. Mon-eignenr Coleman di-d suddenly &t the Bishop’s Palace at 2 o’clock this morning. He had arrive'* in town yesterday to take part in the Council of the Diocese this week, jpe went to the Exhibition in the evening, and tlion«»h it was noticed he was a little duller i ban usua', there was nothing to indical.e that he as seriously ill. Qa his return t,. the Bishop’s residence it was ohot-rved that he was ailing, and on the advic-. of Father Lynch decided to retire to h“'!. He appeared to be sleeping quietly for" some time, but when visited at 10 o’clock it was deemed advisable to send for Dr Fergu9oa, who found Father Coleman suffering from a fit of apoplexy, and, though he did everything po33ible, he deemed the case hopeless, and Father Walsh aaministered the last sacraments. Deceased, who •was 60 years old, was a native ot County Waterford, and was ordained priest in the parish of Cloyne, County Cork, where he
spent 15 years, and then left for Dunedin with Bishop Moran, arriving here in 1870, and receiving the appointment of VicarGeneral of the diocese. Some years later lie paid a visit to the Home country, and on his return was given charge of the Oarnaru district. In J.SB2 he was appointed archdeacon, and a few months ago was created by the Pope Domestic Prelate, with the appellation of Monseigneur. Monsiegneur Coleman willed his p-.operty to the Dunedin Dioee3e.
