HUTT COUNTY COUNCIL.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the Hutt County Council was held on Tuesday morning, there beingpresent—Councillors Brown (chairman), Monaghan, Barton, Lancaster, Taylor, Speedy, Death, Darby, and Wakeham. A communication was received from the Harbour Board stating that in accordance with the Harbours Act the Council would be required to elect a representative next month. It was decided that the next meeting of the Board should take place on Monday, 10th February, when the election will take place. Some discussion ensued with regard to the collection of dog tax, and the opinion was expressed that the collectors Tyere ip the habit of shirking

the work, and only collecting the duty where it could bo easily obtained. On the motion of Councillor Lancaster it was decided that the dog tax for the year should be 5s per dog for ail dogs within the Council’s jurisdiction, and that the amount accruing from the tax, less the amount of the co3t of badges and collars, be handed over to the Highway Board. It was also decided to call for tenders for the collection of the tax in the various ridings, the collectors to act as registrars of dogs for the ensuing year. A slaughterhouse license was granted to Mr .0. Cornelius, of Pauatahanui. Councillor Wakeham mentioned that Mr Thompson, of Wainui-o-mata, had been anxious to obtain a slaughterhouse license, but owing to a misunderstanding he had not fulfilled the requirements of the Act by advertising for a month his intention to apply for a license. The Council decided, as Mr Thompson only wanted to kill a few lambs, that the Inspector should grant hitn a permit on condition that he afterward fulfilled the necessary conditions. Some discussion ensued with regard to the Council’s finances. The Inspector of Roads stated that he was cutting down the expenses in every possible way. The Clerk (Mr Jones) stated that since 'ast meeting the overdraft had been reduced from L 540 to L 413 : and a hope was expressed that the amount would be still further reduced. A tender of LI 15* per annum for the lease of the land and buildings at the Upper Hutt, known as the Stockade, was received from Mr J. G. Kearney. The amount was not considered satisfactory, and it was decided to defer consideration of the tender until next meeting. Accounts amoun ing to L 156 10s Id were passed for payment.
