SPORTING TOPICS.

(BY MARTINI.)

It is again stated that J. Kean, of Auckland, is likely to go to Australia shortly with a team, which will include Cuirassier, and Leopold. ‘ Phaeton ’ sayß that both Chemist and Volcano are to remain iu Auckland foR the Takapuna and Auckland meeting on the 29th and 30th inscs. The Referee states that Mr. Clifford has disposed of his share in C/nisca to Mr. Hunter, formerly part proprietor of the mare.

During the last racing season in America the Dwyer Bros, won 150,390d01s with 29 horses. They scored 109 wins out of 323 starts.

Mr. W. R. Wilson, the Australian Sportsman, offered Mr. Bobbett £IOOO for Quadrant, but the owner would not deal at that figure. Mr. Wilson purchased Kneecap at a price, it is said, of £250. Writing of the Wellington Cup handicap tho critics make their selections as follows : —‘Spectator’: We have not seen Corunna at his best, but taking all things into consideration, I like him best, at the time of writing, Whisper and Lady Norah and Tnmora, if well, would have a say. ‘ Mareppa From a hasty glance at the Wellington Cup weights I shosld say that Leopold, Rose Argent, and Fabulous are a likely trio. ‘Phaeton’: Tirailleur has not been overburdened with 9st, but from recent acts I should doubt Mr. Gollan racing him on those terms. Dudu (Sat 101 b) will have a great say if she can bo brought back to her last year’s form. Lady Norah (Bat 21b), Leopold (7st 131 b), Lady Florin (7stlllb) Cynisoa (7st 111 b) also meet the eye as a very dangerous quartet audit is rather difficult to separate them. Dudu and Lady Norah are, however, the two that I shall select as likely to take the greatest amount of heatin'?.—Sir Lancelot : I shall select Tirailleur, Dudu, Leopold, Cynisca, Rose Argent and Cruiser as tbe best handicapped half-dozen in the Wellington Cup of 1890.

According to an Australian paner, Hux’ey will in future be Mr. James White’s first jockey, Hales having docided not to ride much more.

Town Moor, Mr D. O’Brien’s colt by St. Leger—Miss Laura, is exciting tbe interest of southern critics, who declare him to be a great two-year-old.-A wrestling match came off on Thursday evening between James Dunn and an un known at the London Hotel (says the Dunedin Ti mes), when there was a good attendance. The three styles selected were Graeco-Roman, Lancashire catch.as catch.can, and Border. The unknown proved to be Rowland Kirkwood, of Teviot, who has acquired all his skill locally. He is 25 years of age, medium build, and weights 12st 3lb, while Dunn is 38 years ot age, and weights 9st 71b. The Graeco-Roman style was first tried, and two bouts of 20 minutes each followed, in which neither secured a fall. The Lancashire catch-as-catch-can followed, but here again after a bout of 20 minutes no fall resulted. The Border style was then resorted to, and in about two minutes Dunn secured a fall. Another 20 minutes of the Lancashire fob lowed, but again there was no fall. The display of skill on the part of each man was very good, the prolonged contests being very even and carried on with good temper. The Egmont handicapper had evidently made up his mind that the Auckland Cup winner was entitled to much respect, for he has given t.he horse the very handsome im nostof9st 31b in the handicap, two miles. Leopold is not a horse who could do much under big weights, and he would have a very poor chance of winning the TCgmont Handicap with 9st 31b up. Four other Aucklanders —Lebru n (Sat 4'b), Raglan and Antelope (Bst 71b), and Patchwork (7st 12lb) —seem to me to be much more likely ones, and I dou’t see anything in it that would be likely to beat them if they accept, unless it be Cruiser (6st 101 b. In the Flying Handicap I like best the lightweights Cruiser, Boulanger, and Rewarewa ; and Rossiter ought to win the hurdle race with 9st 71b up if he is in anything like form. The Island Bay Hack Racing Club announce Jubilee Meeting, to be held on Saturday, the 25th inst. Nominations were due yesterday. At the annual meeting of the Dunedin Jockey Club the report stated that the Club had been making steady progress, a substantial profit having been made on each meeting of the year. Mr G. McLean, who presided, after referring to the Club’s record, dwelt at length on the succoss of Mr Dowse as handicapper. He said the Committee could never allow horse-owners to dictate to them, and he was sure that if the gentlemen who had complained of the handicapping only thought of what they were doing they would see it was like holding a cannon to the heads of the Committee, and that their action was unreasonable and one that the Committee could not but defend. He referred to the difficulties of handicapping, and said errors of judgment would creep into handicaps iu spite of the best intentions of any man. He hoped that the thing would now die out, and that those who bad complained would once more come back and race at Dunedin, as it was useless to say that their horses were not an advantage to the public. The report was adopted, aad the retiring]officers were unanimously re-elected. Mr Job Wain proposed a vote of thanks to the officers and Committee, and spoke highly of Mr Dowse’s services, as also did Mr Haynes, who. seconded the vote, which was carried by acclamation. Mr Fagan auggested that the gentlemen who had signed the round robin against Mr Dowse be disqualified from racing at Dunedin for three years for attempting to intimidate the Committee, but no fuither stepß were taken in the matter. A letter was received from a number of horse-owners in Otago approving Mr Dowse’s handicapping. The incoming Committee were recommended to consider Mr Dowse’s claim to a bonus for services rendered in the past. EGMONT WEIGHTS. Rayvera, January 14.
