THE NEW ZEALAND SHIPPING COMPANY.
The telegram from London published elsewhere about the New Zealand Shipping Company will be read with interest. That the Dawes
mortgage is to be provided for will, we should say, excite unmixed satisfaction, while the prospective declaration of a dividend is also gratifying, notwithstanding that it involves the disagreeable process of “writing down.” The Company, however, has had losses ; that is no secret, and until those losses are provided for no dividend can be declared. Such is the law. Hence we presume it may be inferred that the Company’s losses have been appraised at the amount to be written down. On this point, however, a decision must of necessity be withheld. But it seems to us that the Company’s affairs are all the time improving. We are confident that it is possible to put them in a thoroughly sound condition by resolute, able, and impartial administration.
