THE CEMETERY QUESTION.

At last the City Council has made a selection of a cemetery site. Twenty - seven acres on the hill at the back of the grandstand, Island

Bay Racecourse, is the land chosen, and we must say that it does seem to us a better selection might have been made. The distance from the Thorndon end of the city is very considerable, and the situation—well ! it is hilly and rugged enough in all conscience. If it is to be the only cemetery the, area is not too great, but if the Council has any intention of providing another site for Thorndon, half the area would have sufficed, for wo hold firmly to the conviction that ere the expiration of another decade the disposal of the dead by cremation will be the prevailing practice. It does seem strange to us that out of the quantity of country about Wellington no more convenient site than that chosen could have been found. However, we suppose the Council exhausted the panel, figuratively speaking, and took the best site to be obtained. We, however, think the Karori site far more preferable, or even one of the sites in Melrose. Steps will now be taken, of course, to close the cemeteries within the city boundaries, and a growing nuisance will be suppressed.
