(PER PKESS ASSOCIATION.S Dunedtn, January 9. An intimation having been received from the Under Secretary for Defence that the Railway Commissioners cannot see their way to grant free passes to members of rifle cubs attending the Exhibition meeting, Captain Sommerviile will make concessions to such members out of their entrance fees. The work done by two of the pupils of the Tokomairiro High School, in the Bruce Bay, where they are engaged with a lathe and fret saw, afctrac s considerable attention. Visiting teachers are greatly please 1 with the skill shown. The attendance at the Ex ihitioa to-day reached the large total of SSI4, the paid admissions numbering 5330. The Sunday School Union children, with the assistance of the adults, the whole numbering about 500, gave a choral and floral festival in the concert hall, which was packed, many being unable to obtain admission. The display was novel and pretty. Each juvenile had a banner and a bouquet, and these were waved about alternately ns ao accompaniment to the choruses. There was also a palm display and a programme display to the orchestral selection, January 13. Last week the total admissions to the Exhibition i umbered 26,596, of which 17,375 paid at the turnstiles. The total number who have paid since the opening is 143,912. Mr Burdett Smith, C.ALG., of Sydney, in the course of an interview, has expressed himself greatly pleased with Air Joubert’s idea of transferring the exhibits to London, where he thinks people would flock to see them, and that it would awaken interest in the colonies. Having just returned from a prolonged tour to Europe, where ho was Commissioner for Victoria at the Paris Exhibition, Mr Smith thinks ,he can speak with some authority. It has been decided to hold tli9 next special show of dairy produce on the 21st and 22nd of February, comprising cheese, butter, hams, bacon, lard, preserved milk, and honey. The Governor will visit the Exhibition officially to-morrow, and will be accompanied by Lord Carrington. They will be escorted from the Town Hall by the Piesident. Various exhibitors will be presented to Lord Onslow at their respective courts. January 14. The Waitemate Boating Club (Auckland) have notified their intention of taking partin the Exhibition regatta. Lord and Lady Onslow gave a fancy dress ball at Government House to-night, which was largely attended. Lord Carrington and Lord C. Scott were among those present. January 15.

The following entries have been received for the Exhibition baud contest :—Christchurch Garrison, Stanmore, Sydenham, Addington Workshops, Burnham Industrial School, Auoklaud City (Imps), Taranaki Rifles, Napier Garrison, Wellington Garrison, Queenstown, Invercargill Garrison, Invercargill City, Oamaru Naval Artillery, Port Chalmers, Caversham, Dunedin Engineers, Dunedin Garrison, Dunedin Ordnance, Kaikorai, St. Joseph’s Band (Launceston, Tasmania).

The performance of “Elijah” at the Concert Hall this evening was a great success. The hall wascrowded to overflowing. The principals were —Aliss Fanny Bristow (Melbourne), Miss Frederica Mitchell (Melbourne), Mr Piischell (Christchurch), Air J. Prouse (Wellington). All were in excellent voice, and as the choir and orchestra scored another Bucoess, the performance was one of the most successful held here. The Governor, the Countess of Onslow and suite, Rear-Admiral Lord C. Scott, Lord Carrington and suite will attend the concert to be given to-morrow afternoon. The judges in the band contest, in which 400 performers are expected to take part, will be Signor Squarise, Herr Alfred Player, and C. D. Mackintosh (Wellington). In quick-step competition the test will be military as well as musical. The military judges will be Lieutenant-General Fulton, Colonel Alorris, and Major Goring. ALE AND STOUT AWARDS. The jurors in Class XXV. (bulk and bottled ales, stout, &c.) have sent in their decisions as follow Beers in balk Running ale : First-class certificite, Speight and Co., Dunedio ; second class, Briggs, Caversham ; third class, Dunedin Brewery Company ; highly commended, Ehrenfried Bros., Auckland. Alalt bitter ale : First. McGavin and Co., Dunedin ; second, Speight and Co. ; third, James Wilson and Co. ; highly commended, Dunedin Brewery Company. Medium ale : First, Speight and Cc.; second, McGavin and Co. ; third, M. Joel, Dunedin ; highly commended, Briggs, Caversham. Strong ale: First, AlcGavin and Co.; second, J. Wilsonand Co., Dunedin ; third, F. Farmer ; highly commended, Joel, Dunedin. Lager beer : As there was only one exhibit no award is made. Stout, in bulk : First, Speight and Co; second, Surman and Co., Invercargill; third, Briggs, Caversham. Bottled ales—Class A : First, M. Joel, Dunedin ; second, Speight and Co ; third, F. T. Farmer. Class B : First, AlcGavin and Co ; second, Straoban and Co (Limited), Dunedin; third, Manning and (Jo, Christchurch. Bottled stout : First, AlcGavin and Co, Dunediu ; second, W. Strachan (Limited); third, Simpson and Hart. Beside these, awards were made in Australian bottled ales, stout, lager beer, and English bottled ale. The judges were Alessrs J. R. Dodson (Nelson), Job Wain and H. B. Monkman (Dunedin.) Every precaution was taken to conceal the identity of the exhibits from the judges. Dunedin, January 15. In hops only one sample was entered for competition by J. Wilson and Co., of Dune din, who were awarded first certificate. In pale malt Wigram Bros., of Christchurch, 1 ; W. CuddoD, Christchurch, 2.
