FARM LIVE STOCK OF GREAT BRITAIN.
We have received from the publishers, Messrs Oliver and Boyd, of Edinburgh, through . their agents, Messrs George Robertson and Co., a copy of the second edition of “Farm Live Stock of Great Britain,” by Robert Wallace, F.L.S., etc. As a text book for students of agriculture this work is invaluable, while for general readers it conveys a lot of useful information regarding live stock. Although written for Old Country readers there is much information to be gained by colonial farmers. The real object of the work is to lay before its readers in the shortest possible form the many interesting facts about farm stock which ought to be known to every one who takes an inteiest in agriculture- Professor Wallace, who is widely known as an expert in live stock, has turned his knowledge to a good account. In plain easy language he has given forth a work which is perhaps the most comprehensive yet written on the subject, at the same time about the most concise. He deals with the principles cf breeding live stock, and speaks of wild cattle, the originators of all present domestic herds, and then gives a vivid description of the various breeds of domestic cattle, pigs, horses and sheep. He learnedly discusses the various important points connected with the judgment of their value, their management through life, and. their economic treatment after death. The work is further benefited by upward of 100 illustrations of instantaneous photographs of famous and model breeds of live stock, giving to a coL nial reader a good idea of wliat constitutes valued prize stock in the Old Country. Such a work as the one before us should be in the library of every breeder or dealer in live stock in this Colony. Altogether, the work is deserving of high commendaU 9«,
