Some fine specimens showing native silver have been brought into Whangarei from the prospectors’ claim at Puhipuhi. The ore containing the silver is very similar to that of Broken Hill, and the discovery ha 3 caused some excitement. It is reported that all the prospectors are to be ordered ofi the Puhipuhi field, because the licenses have expired, and it is suggested, therefore, that the Government should be asked to open the Puhipuhi field north of the Tangi« pakura River, where thero is mixed bush aud only a little kauri. The mining piospeota in this district are now much more encouraging than at the close of tho old year. The sharemarket has heen closed daring the Christmas and New Year holidays, _ but during this period of speculative inactivity some excellent news has been received from several of the brat mines, and shares have had a corresponding impetus on the upward scale. Basineswas resumed to-day, and there has been a great improvement in Cambria shares, as well as those of the ISloanatairl, Alburnia, Prince Imperial and other claims. The mines and reduction works of the Te Aroha Silver and Gold Miniog Company at Waiorongomai have been visited by Messrs W. R. and S. R. Wilson, of Broken Hill. They were greatly pleased with the eztent of the works, and desoribed them as the most complete in the Australasian colonies. Messrs Wilson have left for Morinsville,6 and they will proceed thence to Rotorua. They intend travelling through the Colony.
