CALEDONIAN SPORTS.
(per press association.) Oabiaru, January 2. The Caledonian Society’s games to-day were largely attended, the weather being fine. The bicycle ra :ea were the principal attraction. The Two-mile B cycle Handicap was won by McDonald (of Timaru), the Three-mile by Fyfe (of Timaru), and the Champion by Stedman (of Dunedin). The racing was good. McLearen won the big handicap. McGlashan won the principal prizes for bagpipe playing. Timaru, January 2. There was a beautiful day for the continuation of the Caledoniau sports, and the attendance was about 300. The sports were pretty well contested. Much interest was shown in the final bayonet competition for the President’s cup between the Ashburton and Sydenham Rifles, and the Lyttelton Navals. The result was Ashburton, 323 points ; Navals, 317 ; Sydenham 270. The Cumberland wrestling also was made interesting by the appearance of Robinßon, a noted balf-castc heavy weight, who won the first money with great ease. In the other events the competitors were local men. An accident in the bicycle race placed two riders hors de combat. The -Society’s concerts last night and to-night were well attended. The local musioians were reinforced from Dunedin and Christchurch. Dunedin, January 2. At the Caledonian sports to-day over 8000 were present. D. H. Fail, of Invercargill, won both the 120 and 350yds events of the Caledonian Handicap. McCabe took second in the 120, and E. Thomas in the 350. In wrestliug (list and under, border, Cornish, and collar and elbow), J, Miller wan first, Rayner second, O’Brien third. M. Powley won tlie event for colonials only. January 6. The gate takings at the Caledonian gathering were £520, against £503 last year. Encouraged by the large attendance, the directors propose holding an extra meeting during the visit of the Australian Governors.
