He received a deputation during the afternoon, bub made few or no promises. He was hanquefcted in the evening at Gilmer’s Hotel, and over a hundred were present. There waa very little iu the speeches. The Premier said it was a little extraordinary that people on the Coast seemed to have such a high opinion of him, as the members they usually sent to Parliament told him the reverse was the case. The Premier left at 2 this afternoon for Kumara. He will go to Hokitika in the morning. He must be here agaiu to-morrow evening in order to cross the bar in the tug to catch the Hinemoa to get back to Wellington to meet Lord Onslow. He originally intended to devote three weeks to the Coast to learn something of the country and the people, but circumstances detained him a fortnight at Wellington, consequently he had no more time than to enable him to see the Westport and Greymouth harbours, but he intended to come again to the Coast to carry out his original resolution. He is accompanied by Mr C. Y. O’Connor and his private secretary.
