THE GALE.

One of the heaviest nor’-west gales experienced foralong time occurred on Tuesday. From an early hour the wind was strong, blowing great clouds of dust in all directions. Aftersundown the wind increased in violence, and was at it 3 height from 9 to 10 o’clock. The Buddon gusts were at times terrific in their force, and chimney pots and loose debris were blown about in all directions. So far as we can learn no important damage is done. A verandah in Willis-street was blown down, of which particulars will be found in another column. The gale was very severe in Nelson and Lyttelton, and no doubt was felt in many other parts of the Colony.

(PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Christchurch, March 12. At 2 p.m. to-day a strong nor’-west gale sprang up. In Lyttelton several fences were blown down. A portion of the iron roof of the railway shed was blown off, some falling 300yds away. The foretopmast of the barque Conference was broken off 20ft from the head. The ketch Aparima was driven on the rocks, but was towed off without damage. The gale moderated about 3, but rose a»ain at o, when a fishing boat containing two men, Watson and Twining, capsized between the moles. The accident waa seen and the men were soon rescued.
