CANTERBURY NEWS.

(per press association.) Christchurch, January 2. A protest lodged against the Pastime and Fleetwing in the yacht race at Lyttelton regatta, on the ground of their not following the proper course, has been disallowed. The second annual session of the New Zealand Secondary Schools Conference was opened in Canterbury College Hall to-day ; 16 members were present,' Mr C. F. Bournie, of Auckland, presiding. It was resolved that the Waitaki Girls’ High School be added to the list of recognised High Schools ; the Auckland Girls' High School, and Bishop’s College, Nelson, were removed from the list. It was resolved “ That it is desirable that each examination paper in the entrance examination of the University of New Zealand should be approved by at least two examiners in eaoh subject.” “That in the opinion of this Conference the time has arrived when high school training, followed by a pass at matrioulation, should be required ot every applicant for the position as pupil teacher. During the discussion on the latter motion Mr Ewan Brown, the headmaster of the Christchurch Boys’ High School, said the present pupil teacher system was wastefnl of brains and tissue, and no doubt of money also. The condition of the pupil teaohers in New Zealand was white slavery. The analysis of the portions of the remains of Mrs Beattie, whose body was exhumed at Hororata a few weeks ago on suspicion of death having been caused by poison, proves that no traces of poison can be found.

About 2.30 this afternoon a fishing boat containing two men, Frank Love and William Gibson, capsized under canvas in Lyttelton harbour, close to a reef. The accident was seen from shore, several boats put out, and both men mere rescued.
