It is much to be regretted that the Liability of Trustees Bill has been passed by thp House of Commons without the clause providing for the investment of trust funds in colonial stocks. The Agents-General for the various colonies appear to have done their best to persuade the Imperial Government to press this clause, hut their efforts have been vain. Mr Goscheu holds out some hopo that the matter may bo taken in hand next year, but his sincerity in the affair has been called in question, it being asserted that he is so bent upon bolstering up his new Consols that everything else has to go by the board. Possibly, however, if when the Imperial Parliament next meets Mr Goshen’s 2f per cents stand high in tho stock market, he may be inclined to lend a more favourable ear to the claims of colonial stocks to a Bhare of the vast sums available for investment in eligible securities. We hope so, at any rate. It would be of great benefit to the colonies if English trust funds could be invested in their stocks, and these unquestionably are as a rule thoroughly safe. Eor the present, however, they are legally boycotted.
