The news that Stanley, the brave explorer, was in safety so recently as the 28th iugust will be read with general pleasure. That date is, however, nearly four months ago, and much may have happened since then. The reasonable presumption is that Osman Digna’s story about bis being a prisoner in the bands of the Mahdi was a mere ruse de guerre for the purpose of averting the severe defeat
which has since befallen him, but it must be confessed that the whole affair is still enshrouded in the deepest mystery.
