REEFTON NEWS.

(from our own correspondent.) Reefton, September 30. The topic of conversation for some time past has been the total failure of the electric light. Were Ito enter into the causes of this failure, I am afraid that I should demonstrate such lamentable incapacity and such thorough waut of knowledge on the subject, that I may be spared from going into details further than to say it was a failure, and that the persons who have had their premises fitted with lamps are compelled to go back again to kerosene. A trial test was made with 100 lamps, 50 of which were temporarily fitted in the Council Chambers, and the other 50 in the Oddfellows' Hall. The turbine for driving the dynamo was fully up to what was expected of it, thus proving that the water power was sufficient. The dynamo is also fully up to its power. Therefore, as the filament could not, either in the Council Chambers or the Oddfellows' Hall, be brought to inoandescence, the inference is that the circuit was faulty and the connections badly made. The Directors have very wisely hung the Company up for the present until the arrival of Mr Horton, a practical electrical engineer, who was telegraphed for; and who is daily expected to arrive at the Bluff. This gentleman has been employed in the electrio light installation at the Melbourne Exhibition. This delay will also give the Company time for reforming with increased capital, thus allowing them an opportunity of bringing the installation to a successful issue.

A football match was played between 15 of the Black Diamond (Brunnerton team) and 15 of the Reefton Club, yesterday. The weather was all that could bo desired, and the turf excellent. Unfortunately for the visitors they could not havo selected tho beat conveyance, for the last eleven miles thoy had to perform on Shanks’ pony, and did not arrive iu Reefton till 4 a.m. on Saturday morning. This did not place them to the very best advantage against a heavier team, or fit them to play two spells of football the same afternoon. However, they took their drubbing with the very best grace, and did their level best until the finish. The result was as follows Reefton—First spell, two goals and. one try ; second spell, three tries ; total, 10 points. Brunnerton, ni'.
