[By Fossicker], Christchurch, October 9. There is little or no news stirring here in the sporting line since the Geraldine Meeting in addition to what I have sent you. Manton and Chudleigh reached here this morning iu the Rotomahana, and went direct to Riccartou. Artillery has, as I predicted, been relegated to the stud, and is offered for sale for that purpose. There are mom tho-rough-bred horses here for sale than there are buyers for just at present, as the business does not prove too encouraging. Mr Penfold returned to Christchurch today, after haring paid a hurried visit to Melbourne.
Saturday proved quite an attractive one for pleasure seekers, be they inclined to boating, cricket or bowling, the seasons for each of these sports boing duly opened in each case. The Avon was fairly alive with boats of all classes to witness the boating season opened, which was carried out with great success, aud without a hitch, twentyfive boats fairly decorated with flowers aud flags, and manned with their respective crews, being ably marshalled by Yen. Archdeacon Lingard, at the East Belt Bridge. Subsequently some scratch races were rowed, which proved enjoyable.. At the theatre during the afternoon a most interesting performance was being witnessed by the Mayor, about a dozen representatives of the medical profession, and a few Press meu. This was a stance, in which the two Donaldson Brothers, now performing at the Theatre Royal with F. M. Clark’s All-Star Company, gave a semi-medical proof of their muscular development, which is marvellous. Being all but stripped, they proved to those present the inflexibility of their joints, one of them going through his feat of dislocating his two hip joints, and thus turning his face round to where the back of bis head should be. There is something * uncanny ’ about this sort of thing, but it shows what can be done by training, as he explained that he had been doling the same thing since he was six years of age, firstly for fun, but latterly for profit. The All-Star Company leave for
Wellington on Thursday, and open .with you on Friday evening, and from the genial agent, Cunard, and lessee, H. N. Abbott; of Auckland, to the other members of the coriipsiny, are worth seeing. They go through a mestenjoyable,. interesting and amusing entertainment, and deserve good patronage. Sylvo’s feats of balancing anytning aud everything are marvels in themselves.
