HAVELOCK NEWS.

(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) September 2tt. Thete are now no fewer than 13 applications lodged in the Warden’s CoUrt for licensed holdings, the last applicant being Colonel Fraser of-the Thames, styled the Victoria Claim at Mahakipawa, adjoining the Duchess of Marlborough claim on its northern boundary. Thirty acres are applied for ; capital, LSOOO ; mode of working, quartz reefing by machinery; term of lease, 21 years. The Warden’s Court Will be held here Ott the 3rd- October, and very many are anxiously awaiting the decisions on tho applications. ... It has been generally , aOkrioWledgod that it is impossible,to please, everybody and to d cfe-rtaiii extent do justice to every one ; but it is generally acknowledged in the district that Mr John Alien, Resident Magistrate and Warden, is a thoroughly just and conscientious man, and one' determined to do his duty. With him it is’ a fair field and no favonr, and that under existing circumstances is what cannot be too highly valued. A large number of men have left here for the Waikakaho, and glowing reports have been received of gold being picked Up, but in reality no authentic accounts have been received, and it is probable that the first news of anything extraordinary being fduild would be first received in Blenheim, as the actual distance from that town to the Waikakaho is less than it is from Havelock. Will the Minister of Mines be induced to visit this district ; and Marlborough generally ? Everything here is in a transition state, and we are literally in the position that ‘‘ We know not what a day may bring forth.” A number of parties at Mahakipawa have either sold or cleared put for the new diggings at Waikakaho. Evidently the text of the diggers is, “ Here we have no abiding city.” How'far that is prudent, probably it is not worth while to inquire, as giving advice to parties whose minds are det’ermihedron a-certain line of action is only so much waste of time.
