It is stated by a contemporary that “some L 25,000 is required to cut _an intercepting drain ” to check the slipping of the site of the Seacliff LHnatic Asylum, and that this added, to LIB,OOO, the estimated cost of the tunnel past the dangerous cliffs near Purakanui, will make a total of “ some L 45,000,” which “ the Colony will have to pay to remedy errors which non-professional people clearly saw and pointed out when they were being made.” There is clearly an accident#! error here. The cost of the proposed S.eaelif firain inadvertently been multiplied tenfold, the actual esfcimated cost being L 2500, not.“ L 25,000.
