INDUSTRIAL PROTECTION LEAGUE.

A well-attended meeting of the local branch of the Industrial Protection League of New Zealand was held at tho Athenaeum on Tuesday for the purpose of the tariff and the financial proposals of the Government. The President of the branch occupied the chair. After stating the business for which the meeting was convened he requested an expression of opinion from tho members and gentlemen present. An animated discussion on the new tariff followed, the tone of the meeting pointing to the present juncture as one of difficulty to the Government in dealing with such an important question, and eventually the following resolution was carried without miioh dissent:—“ That the tariff proposals of the Government are on the whole satisfactory, that the increase of duties will in various instances create new industries, and give such an impetus to those now in existence as will go far to counter-balance the taxation the Colony must bear if its credit is / to be maintained.” The Secretary was instructed to forward a- copy of the above resolution to the Premiei, and to the various branches of the League in the Colony. It was also resolved “That a committee of this branch be appointed to watch the progress of the Customs Tariff Bill through, the committee of tho House, and to make such Bug. gestions to Protectionist members as may berequired.” The election of auditors took place, and Messrs H. Hurrol and G. were appointed. Some other business to be" brought; forward at the annual meeting of the Association in July occupied the further rttent cn of the meeting, which closed with the usual vote of thanks to the chair.
