SHIPPING SUMMARY. ■ The weather during the pa«t month has settled down considerably, and has been much more seasonable for the shipping trade. This has been felt particularly in the coastal and intercolonial trade, which is more liable to interruption than the Home trade through stoppages in the discharge of cargo on account of bad weather, and also through vessels being detained in port for the same reason. The number of English and American arrivals during the month have been few, and we have only had one mail steamer from England for Wellington direct. On Saturday, the 13th ult, the New Zealand Shipping Company’s R.M.S. Tongariro arrived here from London, via Plymouth, Madeira, Capetown, and Hobart. She left Plymouth on the 2nd July, and experienced light northerly winds and fine weather to Madeira, where she arrived at 10.45 am: on the Cth. She left the Cape for Hobart at 4.45 pm on the 22nd July, and had light to moderate NW winds to the meridian of 135 E, and from thence to Hobart moderate SW winds and fine weather, where she arrived at 9.45 am on the 9th ultimo. After landing 17 passengers for Australian ports, and coaling and provisioning the ship, she left at 2.20 pm on the same day for Wellington. She experienced strong to moderate southerly winds and fine weather till abreast of Cape Farewell at 2 am on the 10th August, and arrived here as above. Tile Tongariro"s total time from Plymouth to New Zealand was 42 days 0 hours 20 minutes, and her actual steaming time 40 days IS hours 30 minutes. Her average speed was 13T‘5 knots. She brought 100 passengers of all classes, 371 sacks of mails, and 2800 tons of cargo. The passage was throughout a most enjoyable one, the usual amusements having been arranged with great success. The barquentine May arrived, off the Heads on the evening of the 21st of August, and beat into harbor on the 22nd, in the morning. The May was 15 days on the passage from Australia, and her cargo was consigned to Messrs Turnbull and Co. She had strong southerly winds up to within 200 miles of Cape Farewell, and thence light winds to arrival. She left for the Bluff, where she loads for Newcastle and Sydney, on the 4th instant. On the 25th August the R.M.S. Kaikoura took her departure for England. She had in her chambers 19,040 carcases of frozen mutton and 140 quarters ot beef. The Brunner Coal Company have had their paddle steamer Dispatch brought from Greymouth, where she has for many years been used as a tug boat, to Wellington. She is intended for use in the harbor, and is commanded by Captain Millman, late of the brigantine Eliza Firth. The Dispatch has undergone some alterations, and will be well suited for towing purposes. On last Tuesday evening a pleasing ceremony- took place on board'the S.S. and A. Co's s.s. Arawa, when Mr W. G. O. Johnston, the late chief steward, was presented by Ills late assistants and the members of the victualling department with a handsome _ marble. clock, suitably inscribed, on the occasion of his leav- ; ing the steamer to settle in business ir.' Wellington. Mr Row, the chief purser, made the presentation in a neat little speech, in which he expressed the best wishes for Mr Johnston’s future prosperity on behalt of himself and the ship’s company. Mr Johnston replied in a few well-chosen words, after which his health was drunk in a very hearty manner.
