MEETING OF THE RUGBY UNION.
A meeting of the Management Committee of the Rugby Union was held at the Post Office Hotel on Monday evening. There were present—Messrs J. M. King (in the chair), M. C. Barnett, S. Nicholls, J. W. Kilner, and E. Davy (secretary). A letter was read from the Wairarapa Rugby Union, ask. -ing if it was true that the Wellington Union intended sending a junior representative team to the Wairarapa this season. On the motion of Mr J. W. Kilner, seconded by Mr Barnett, it was decided that the letter should be referred to the captains of junior clubs to arrange the match if practicable. The Secretary of the Nelson Union wrote asking if the Wellington Union intended to send a team over this season. The writer said it would be a pity if the time-honored custom of exchanging annual visits were allowed to lapse. It was resolved to reply that it was impossible to send a team to Nelson this year, pointing out the time that they took to return Wellington’s visit. A lengthy communication was received from the Secretary of the Melrose Club, protest. ing against the decision of the Committee that the final heat of the Junior Cup should be played at Taita, on the grounds—That all Cup heats have been played at Newtown ; that there were hundreds, who were very much interested in the Cup, who were enentitled to some consideration from the Union, whom they had supported during the season ; that the match would prove an extra attraction in conjunction with the senior and costume matches to bo played on Saturday. In conclusion the writer suggested that if the Committee decided not to alter their former decision, that the names of both teams should be put on the cup. and also that if the match was played and ended in a draw that the names of both teams should be put on the cup. A letter was also received from the Secretary of Hearn’s Committee, asking the
Committee to reconsider their decision, and allow the Junior match to be played at Newtown Park next Saturday. It was decided, on the motion of Mr Kilner, that the last resolution, as to the Junior Cup, should he rescinded, and that the final match should be played at Newtown on Saturday next. It was decided to return a communication from the Secretary of the Union Club containing an explanation respecting the disqualification of one of the members of the Club as a junior player, and it was also decided that the Committee refuse to accept the explanation in its present form, and still await a proper explanation. It was decided that Messrs Fitz Gerald, Gully, Webb, and Dr Newman should be asked to wait on the City Council with reference to asking that body to plough up the ground at Newtown Park and sow grass seed during toe close season. Messrs Webb, Kilner, and the Secretary (Mr E. Davy) were appointed to act in conjunction with Hearn’s Committee in arranging the costume match.
