Communicationstojbe addressed to the Editor of this column.] MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS. Dion Boucicault is now engaged writing a new play, which will shortly be produced in Now York. The Mammoth Minstrels were to open at Abbott’s Opera House on Thursday. After Auckland, Messrs Moore and Ashton will give the Thames a * turn.’ The Lynch Family of Bellringers are now performing in Dunedin to good business. ‘ lolanthe ’ was produced in Dunedin last week by the Amateur Operatic Society. Mr Montague Pym, who achieved a great success as Buntliorne in ‘ Patience,’ when the opera was performed by amateurs in that city some time ago, appeared as Lord Chancellor. Criticising ‘ Fedora,’ iu which the Majeronis open in Wellington on the 19th inst, the Auckland Herald says :—Throughout the whole drama Signor Majeroni fairly divided the honors with his accomplished wife. His easy grace of manner in the introductory scenes of the second act, an 1 his declaration of passionate and hopeful love for the Princess, were all given with characteristic elegance ; his powerful emotion when relating the wrongs he had suffered through his first wife and- Vladimir, his depth of grief at the exile which separated him from his loved mother and brother, showed a superb power and masterly conception of manly emotion ; and, in the final scenes his display of concentrated passion on learning of the death of his mother and brother, and that his wife was the cause of their death, was sublime in its intensity. The Vokes have been playing in the Wairarapa, where the critics are loud iu their praise. Mr J. L. Hall was too unwell to leave Wellington to go with them, and so remained here under medical treatment. Dunedin amateurs lately produced ‘ lolanthe ’ and the performance is declared a great success. Miss Amy Sherwin, ‘ the Tasmanian nightingale,’ was to appear in Sydney in concerts a week or two ago. Mr Moutague Brown, formerly business manager for Williamson, Garner, and Masgrove, is now managing for Carrie Swain.. Apropos of Mr Brown, a story of his smartness is still told in Wellington. Years ago when the old Opera House was standing, he was here with a company, which, I believe, was Rignold’s. They were playing in the Opera House, which took fire one memorable evening. Before people knew where the fire was he had engaged the Theatre Royal at an easy figure, and hiß company went on playing in it after the Opera House was burned, just as if nothing extraordinary had happened. The Majeronis will open here at the Opera House on Monday, the 19th instant, in “ Fedora,” and the business manager, Liddy, arrived here yesterday to make arrange, ments for the season. The company, which is said to be one of the strongest that ever came to New Zealand, have a large repertoire, plays of the very best class, and many that are new. The Lynch Family of Bellringers commenced their season at the Princess Theatre, Dunedin, Wednesday, to a good house. The company remain in Dunerlin until the 14th, and then proceed North, playing a short season'here. A fancy dress skating carnival will be held at the skating rink, Manners-street, about the end of the present month. Considerable interest is being taken in the affair, which promises to be a great success. Autoltcus.
