THE OMAPERE-DREDGE COLLISION. (UNITED FB.ESS ASSOCIATION.) Dunedin, January 31. The Court of Inquiry found that the master of the dredge and the master of the Omapere were both to blame for not reducing their speed before the collision occurred. The certificates were returned, and the two masters were ordered to share the costs of the inquiry - Later. Mr G. H. Carew, R.M., and Rear-Admiral Scott and Captain Orkney, Assessors, gave the following as their decision regarding the cauße of the late collision in the Lower Harbor : That the collision was occasioned by the want of due caution by Captain Stewart in approaching the Narrows, knowing that he was fast nearing another vessel, and not sufficiently reducing his speed, and in not keeping closer

“to the starboard side of the channel; and by •the captain of the Omapere, who knew he was approaching the dredge, and might meet her in the .narrow channel, in not noticing his -speed earlier; and knowing the difficulty of stopping his vessel should occasion require it. 'The Assessors recommend that, for the purpose of improving the navigation of the channel, especially of the Narrows ; that a dolphin be placed on the SW side of the shoal, opposite the north entrance to the Narrows at a point now indicated on the chart ; and that in the sailing directions for vessels going up the harbor, vessels should be recommended to steer for the dolphin until .-.sufficiently close to open up the whole channel to the upper beacon before heading for the •entrance ; that the point of Goat Island nearest the Narrows should be cut down so as to further improve the field of view. The costs of each party amount to LS Bs, and each is to pay his own costs.
