New Zealand Mail Office, Thursday Evening. The vessels with cargoes from England arriving during the past week have been the ship Turakina from London, and the ss Aorangi from London, via Southern ports. Business has been somewhat brisker for some days past. As Christmas approaches, retailers are laying in supplies. Prices, however, remain much as. theywere last week. There are no alterations in the quotations for wine, beer, or spirits. The quotations for the Auckland Company’s sugar in Wellington are—No. 1, L 27 per ton ; No. 2, L 25 ; and No. 3. L2O. China A sugar is quoted at L 25 5s to L 26 ; American granulated at L 27. Currants sell at from 5d io-s£d ; elemes, 6d to salmon are worth from 8s to 8s 6d, according to brand. Star lobsters are quoted at 9s_6d_; and other brands, 8s 9d to 9s. Japan rice is quoted from L2O to L2O 10e per ton. The 4th of the month passed over very well, and the requests for assistance were neither numerous nor of great importance. STOCK SALES. Christchurch, December 8. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company report (per- Mr E. G. Staveley) as follows At Addington yards today, there were about 6000 sheep and moderate entries of pigs and cattle. Store cattle sold freely. Fat cattle were dull. Dullocks brought 116 to L 7 15s ; cows L 4 10s to L 6 15s ; beef 17s to 20s per 100 lb. Store sheep were m better demand. Fat sheep were very dull except the best wethers for export- 2?at crossbred wethers brought 8s to 11s 9d ; one pen supe-
rior, 16s ; ewes, 4s 6d to 7s ; mutton Id to If d per lb. Pigs sold well; porkers, medium, 15s to 245; heavy, 30s, ’ Dunedin, December 8. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company report (per Mr D. Stronach) as follows: —249 cattle were yarded. An extra heavy draft from Wanganui brought Ll2 to Iil6; others good to prime, L 8 to Lll.lOs; medium, L 4 lOs.to L 7. Beef 20s per 100 lb. Sheep—2342 were penned. Best cross•breds, shorn, brought Is 9d to ,9s 3d ; one extra heavy pen, 11s 9d ; low to medium; 4s 9d to 7s 6d ; merino wethers in the wool, 5s 3d to 9s. Mutton, Id to ljd per lb. 152 lambs brought 4s to 8s 3d each. ~ There were 234 pigs. Suckers brought 5s 9d to 14s; porkers, 22s to 26a ; baconers, 30s to 40s.
