ARRIVAL OF BEACH IN SYDNEY.

William Beach, the champiou oarsman, who arrived in Sydney to-dav, met with a most enthusiastic reception, immense crowds assembling in the streets arid around the harbor to welcome him.

The first of the Tainui Canoe Club’s Paddling Handicaps of this season took place on Saturday afternoon. The following started :—Lara (Harper), scratch ; Tanlwha (Williams), 50sec; Tuatara (Kereru), lmin 50see Beeswing (Bothamley), lmin 50sec ; Ceroit More (Fitz Gerald), 2min ssec ; Albatross (Rawaon), 2min 20sec. Result—Ceroit More, 1 ; Beeswing, 2; Lara, 3. Tariiwha, and Tuatara close up in the order named. There was a heavy sea on. Mr Knapp acted as starter and judge. Two heats of the Star Boating Club’s fours were pulled off on Tuesday evening, the crews being as follow: —Webb’screw v S. Kennedy’s, the former winning by about two lengths ; and E. Burns’ crew v Colgrove’s. This was won by Burns’ crew by about one length, after a closely-contested race. Another heat of the Young trophies, Wellington Rowing Club, was rowed last Tuesday evening, at 6 p.m. the competing crews being as follow : —S. Waters (bow),W. Murdoch (2), C. Mouat (3), G. R. Wylde (stroke) v. W. Scutt (bow), El. Petrie (2), W. Ballinger (3), T. R. H. Taylor (stroke). The course was from Magazine Point to the Te Aro Baths. The race was pretty close throughout, both crews keeping well together nearly the whole way. When opposite Oriental Bay a foul was narrowly averted, and Wylde’s crew by a good spurt drew away, and ultimately won by about two lengths.
