THE WEST COAST RAILWAY.

(united press association.) Kumara, December 7.

At a public meeting largely attended last night, the Mayor (Mr Burger) presiding, the following resolutions were carried unanimously (1.) That in the best interests of the Colony it is absolutely necessary for the Grey-Hokitika Railway to be so deviated as to connect Kumara ; that unless this is effected, a serious injury will be done to the inhabitants of this part of the Colony, and the railway, if made on the direct route, will not pay; ' that the proposed deviation will permit of lines with easy grades and less altitude than reported on to the Minister of Public Works, who has refused the deviation without correct knowledge of the configuration of the locality. The meeting strongly nrges a further survey, which can easily be effected, before the bridge can be constructed. (2.) The meeting strongly urge upon the Government the necessity of at once putting in hand the survey of the branch line from Kumara to Lake Brunner, as shown on the plans attached to Mr Blair’s report on the lands traversed by the East and West Coast Railway.
